My Guide To A Toxin Free Laundry

Many laundry products contain harmful toxins such as benzyl acetate, which is linked to pancreatic cancer, benzyl alcohol, which irritates the respiratory tract, chloroform which is a neurotoxin and a carcinogen, and then there’s the dreaded fake fragrances and phthalates which disrupt hormones. Um no thanks! We’re supposed to be cleaning our clothes not making them worse! I can’t stand the smell of the cleaning isle at the supermarket, even before I started this low tox journey it would give me an instant headache, and now I know it’s all the fake fragrances that cause it. How did we get so convinced that we needed harsh chemicals to clean everything? We absolutely don’t need these weird bright blue liquids and...

My Guide to Toxin Free Hair Care

I’m not going to harp on again about the nasties in most conventional hair care products, you can read my previous post on SLS and SLES here, this post is about moving forward with your toxin free life and understanding just how easy it is to switch to natural hair care products. My hair is super thick, well on its way to being 100% grey and quite curly, but my sister, who has pretty much the total opposite hair to me, uses a lot of the same products and has great results with them too so they’re suitable for most people.   Shampoo, I wash my hair twice a week with Acure Repairing shampoo and conditioner. I get it in the huge...

Making the Switch to Reusable Cloth Pads

Recently I made the switch from disposable organic cotton pads to reusable organic cotton cloth pads, and the verdict? I love them! They’re more comfortable than disposables and so easy to use. I bought a pack from HannahPad Australia for $150 which included 2 small, 4 medium, and 2 large as well as some wet bags and some soap to soak them in. HannahPad do lots of packs, including some small starter packs so you can trial them and see if you like them before investing in more. It’s extremely important to choose organic cotton sanitary products as conventional products have been found to contain a combination of plastics, cotton, synthetic fibres, wood pulp and fragrances. That really boils my blood, we assume...

My First Steps To Plastic Free Living

Was I the only one who really struggled through Plastic Free July? Man it was harder than I thought it would be! I envisioned myself breezing through it and being able to put my plastic waste is a tiny little jar at the end of the month. But I could have filled an entire bin bag with the stuff! I think actually being conscious of plastic made me realise how much I really use. I thought I’d just be saying no to plastic straws and taking a keep cut around in my bag but boy it’s everywhere! I never really thought about the plastic packaging on my food, I buy pasta in a box but it still has a plastic sleeve around...

4 Toxin Free Things I Always Have In My Handbag

I know I just posted a list a few days ago but I’m doing the ProBlogger challenge this week (a post a day eeek!) and the first challenge is a list post! So I thought I’d write a list of low tox things I never leave home without. 1. When going low tox you start to look at public bathroom soap like poison (hyperbole yes, but who doesn’t love a dramatic statement?!) so I avoid the weird hand soaps and use my Dr Bronner’s lavender hand sanitiser instead, just a couple of sprays and rinse. No poison for me! 2. Weleda skin food, this stuff is pretty amazing. Weleda have used the same formula since 1926, it can be used...
